Tax Compliance Management Analyst

Role synopsis

This role is accountable for;

  • support the preparation and submission of direct tax returns, ensuring accurate and timely compliance
  • managing most of the Group’s UK filing, reporting and documentation obligations covering all UK Corporate tax and to ensure these are prepared and delivered on time and to the requisite standard. This role will also be responsible for managing the various timetables and deadlines within the UK Direct tax team, including the UK corporation tax filing process.

Key accountabilities

Functional

UK Direct Tax Compliance cycle management

  • Responsible for managing the overall UK tax computation and tax notes compliance preparation process, working closely with Compliance team to keep aware of work capacity and proactively seeking to allocate work to mitigate workload peaks
  • Key point of contact in relation to UK compliance documents, working with UK tax team advisors
  • Establish strong working relationships with Finance (both within and outside the UK), 3rd party vendor and Kuala Lumpur Tax
  • Preparing relevant updates, as required, for the Compliance Team Lead, including the status of Tax milestones for the weekly status report meetings, updates for the monthly governance board meetings and quarterly joint review board meetings

External compliance – corporate tax returns
  • Liaise with Finance and/or extract financial data to ensure data meets tax requirements and, where necessary, raise further queries.
  • Understand nature of data required to complete tax returns and ensure submitted financial information meets all requirements.
  • Use appropriate software for preparation of Complex tax returns and prepare first draft of periodic tax returns for review by onshore team.
  • Perform first level review of tax returns prepared by the local team.
  • Be the first point of contact for all tax compliance matters to both local tax teams and Group finance.
  • Monitor, support and provide advice to ensure team’s accurate and timely delivery of range of services, in accordance with Service Level agreements and appropriate processes and policies.
  • Supports the creation of guidance manuals for tax processes and procedures in partnership with BP Group Finance and Tax teams and ensure all documentation remain up-to-date.
  • Requires sound knowledge of own technical discipline and possesses the ability to understand a variety of issues and develop appropriate action plans

Service Management and Continuous Improvement
  • Ensure continuous improvement in operational processes, process simplification and compliance through utilisation of key metrics and taking remediation action as required.
  • Identify process and system improvement opportunities, develop short term workaround solutions or provide recommendations for permanent solutions and implement.
  • Maintain strong professional relationships with internal partners and external stakeholders.
  • Provide training, troubleshooting documentation and continual on the job guidance for relevant team stakeholders

Essential Education

  • A university degree or professional qualification, in accountancy or its equivalent. A tax qualification is advantageous.

  • Minimum of 4 - 5 post qualification experience in tax compliance and / or tax accounting role.
  • Good knowledge of corporate tax and accounting principles

Essential Competencies

  • The ability to prepare medium to large sized entity tax returns or lead the medium complexity projects with minimum supervision.
  • The ability to work with team members to make a real difference.
  • The ability to identify issues/errors and make moderate solution/suggestions.
  • The ability to articulate the issues to Team Lead.
  • The ability to impact team’s objectives, targets and milestones for the team.
  • The ability to propose potential solutions to problems within the scope of one’s discipline.
  • The ability to provide written and verbal reports on progress with broad guidance on approach and method of work.
  • The ability to develop and implement plans for team’s compliance obligation, planning is between 3 to 6 months in advance.

Desirable criteria & qualifications

  • Membership with the Chartered Tax Institute of Malaysia or Australian &/or UK &/or US equivalent
  • Well versed in computer skills and software application (eg. SAP & Tax Software) and experience with IFRS
  • Analytical with good problem solving skills, adaptable to work in different environment and a team player
  • Good communication skills are required to interface at all levels in the business community, with Tax and with external parties.
  • A proven ability to work as part of multi-disciplinary teams and to build and maintain network within and outside Tax.
  • Good interpersonal skill and proactive approach
  • Possess positive thinking & attitude, professionalism, takes ownership of and accountability of the work product
  • Good command of English language, both written and oral.
  • Possess effective time management skills
