As a Platform Engineering Lead, you’ll be a senior member of the team, providing custom-built or customized IT platforms for BP colleagues and external users. IT platforms generally support hosting of applications which in turn, supports revenue earning activity for BP, or directly provides business functionality in the same vein. Strong themes running throughout Platform Engineering include automation of manual activity, focus on operational integrity at scale, optimization of technical resources, and speed to value.

Lead Platform Engineers work with the team to define vision and maximize value from current technical platforms and emerging technologies, showing technical thought leadership. They also collaborate with peers across IT&S teams and mentor more junior platform engineers.

The Insights and Enablement squad provides common network insights and network foundational functions. You will support us using tools to aid the diagnostics, capacity, visualisation of the network stack and you will be identifying and isolating complex network incidents to support other network squads. You will operate and enhance the tools such as DDI and NPM. We deliver these services around the world and have teams across regions. You could be called upon to lead resolution of major incidents outside of working times on a rotational basis with other regions.

At IT&S, all the roles are within Chapters. While your role will continue to remain within the Chapter, your initial activities described below may change over time.


Key Accountabilities


Team: You will lead teams of Software Engineers and Business Analysts to translate relevant business requirements into designs for technical platforms. You will design, test and operate custom built or customized IT platforms aimed at improving business delivery processes. You will work according to professional engineering practices, including Internet protocols, coding standards and reviews, source control management, design and operations processes.

Relationships: You will work with the team to create a clear vision and maximize value from current applications and emerging technologies, demonstrating technical thought leadership in your business area across a wide range of technologies. You will also contribute to the continuous improvement of the wider IT&S team by supporting and coaching Platform Engineers and proactively improving the quality standards and efficiency of delivery.

Job Advert:

Essential Education
  • Ideally a Bachelor's (or higher) degree from a recognized institute of higher learning, ideally focused in Computer Science, MIS/IT, Mathematics or a hard science.
  • 5 years’ experience in a relevant role or roles.

Desirable Criteria
  • You are confident working with commonly used network equipment in an enterprise environment (such as Cisco, Juniper, HPE/Aruba, etc).
  • You have had exposure to adjacent domains such as platforms, storage, databases, etc. You know your way around a command-line.
  • You have good knowledge and understanding of modern development methodologies (Agile using Scrum and/or Kanban).
  • You know about DevOps practices and techniques such as Value Stream Mapping, Lean, flow, eliminating waste.
  • You have experience of modern approaches to source-code management and control through tools such as TFS and Git/GitHub.
  • Have good interpersonal skills including the ability to relate complex topics in simple and accessible language.
