Chief Engineer

Role synopsis

The Chief Engineer has the authority to take action to ensure the safety of the vessel and crew and to effectively carry out the responsibilities of the role. They must seek guidance as directed by the Master and the Fleet Operating Management System. They manage the Engine Department of the assigned vessel, including contractors when working on board.

Key accountabilities

Maintains the vessels machinery and equipment in a state of readiness at all times and in compliance with all applicable Legal, National, International and BP Shipping requirements.
Be responsible for the safe and efficient operation of the ships main and auxiliary machineries. -Maintain all engineering drawings, records, manufacturer’s instructions and Company engineering documentation.
Maintain the vessel engineering operations in a state of readiness for any internal and Manage the Computer based Maintenance Management System (CMMS) in line with the BP Shipping requirements and ensure defects are recorded and planned for repairs in a timely manner.
Support the Vessel Superintendent in organising and managing the dry docking operations in conformance with the Fleet OMS requirements.
Be responsible for all bunkering operations.
Conform with all the requirements of the Fleet OMS applicable to the rank.
To act as the Environmental Officer (EO), per the requirements of the vessels Ship Energy Efficiency Management Plan (SEEMP). Make the correct and appropriate entries into the ships log books, oil record books, NOx technical files and IGS record book.
Act as a member of the Shipboard Emergency Response and Fire Fighting Team in accordance with the muster lists and shipboard contingency plans.
Operate ships Life Saving and Fire Fighting Appliances when required.
Provide mentoring, training and guidance as per the BPMS Training Manual to the vessels personnel.
Maintain the fabric maintenance of the engine room to a high standard and as per the Fabric maintenance procedure (PRD-168). Maintain suitable stock levels of engine spares, consumable items, oils and chemicals in a cost-effective and timely manner. Contribute to the budget planning process and support management of the ships budget by effective planning and efficient use of spares, stores and consumables.
To manage and supervise contractors and service engineers whilst on board and ensure their work is verified by a competent engineer before equipment is put back in service.

Essential Education

Chief Engineers Motor III/2 ticket or equivalent

Essential experience and job requirements

Significant experience working as a Chief Engineer on tankers
Full understanding of all engineering systems on board
Full understanding of all safety and emergency systems and equipment
Working knowledge of all shipboard Information technology hardware system, computer based reporting and word processing software systems applicable to the role
Knowledge of the maintenance requirements of all engine, deck and cargo equipment
Knowledge of paint systems and their application
High level of verbal and written communication skills in English

Other Requirements (e.g. Travel, Location)

Individuals who work in the BP European fleet are generally domiciled in the UK, Ireland or Poland.
