The Process Control Engineer contributes to safe and reliable refinery operations and maximized value through process control development, application, support, and maintenance, enabling operation of process units within established equipment and process safety limits.. Key Accountabilities
Reviews instrument, control, and logic design recommendations for both capital and expense projects.
Has shared responsibility for all aspects of the process computing system including system software troubleshooting & maintenance, application development, operator interface maintenance & development, system configuration, long-term planning, training, and documentation.
Identifies, evaluates, and implements new advanced controls and automation applications. Has responsibility of for project development including conceptual design, alternative review, costs, benefits, risks & mitigations, resources, plant testing, model development, interface construction, commissioning, training, and documentation.
Designs, commissions, tunes, enhances and troubleshoots applications which consist of regulatory, advanced regulatory and multi-variable DMC controls.
Understands Company HSE practices, policies, & procedures and participates in Refinery HAZOP’s and RCFA’s.
Assists in training and development of Process Control Engineers, Process Engineers, and Operation Technicians.
Participates in knowledge transfer with other BP facilities.
Represent Toledo as required on cross-SPU technical Community of Practice (CoP) teams, including participation in annual global CoP meetings
Participate in the refinery process technology network of all process engineers in the Toledo BU
Support continued safe refinery operations in the event of a work stoppage by hourly workforce

Educational background:
  • A Bachelors degree in chemical or electrical engineering or a related discipline is required

Experience Required:
Three years of process control experience in an operating refinery, chemical facility or similar process facility.
A working knowledge of a modern Distributed Control System, including point configuration and database, software coding, schematic building.
Desired experience with multivariable matrix control technology (preferably DMC) and a background in the following areas: controller maintenance and troubleshooting, controller design and implementation, parameter tuning, problem solving, decision making, project development and execution, feasibility studies, and economic analyses is desired. Alternately training in this area could be provided to the successful candidate.
Specialist control skills are required including an understanding of process dynamics, control engineering principles, and practical operating knowledge.
Familiar with control system documentation such as P&IDs, Loop Diagrams, Cause & Effects

Experience Desired:
A total of 8 years process control experience either through work in an operating refinery/chemical facility, related academic experience, or a combination of both.
Experience with Honeywell TDC3000, Experion or both.
Knowledge of SCADA and other Open technology
Ability to communicate effectively with unit operators, maintenance staff, managers, and others outside of your area of technical expertise
